Yokozuna

Yokozuna (横綱) is the highest rank in sumo wrestling. It is awarded to wrestlers who have demonstrated exceptional skill and achievement. Yokozuna are expected to be role models for other wrestlers and to uphold the traditions of sumo.

History

The rank of yokozuna was first established in the 17th century. The first wrestler to be awarded the rank was Akashi Shiganosuke, who was promoted in 1694. Since then, there have been 72 yokozuna in total.

Qualifications

To be eligible for promotion to yokozuna, a wrestler must meet the following criteria:

  • Win at least two consecutive championships in the top division (makuuchi)
  • Have a winning record of at least 80% in the top division
  • Be considered a role model for other wrestlers and uphold the traditions of sumo

Promotion

Yokozuna are promoted by the Japan Sumo Association (JSA). The JSA considers a number of factors when making a decision, including the wrestler's record, his performance in recent tournaments, and his overall conduct.

Responsibilities

Yokozuna are expected to be role models for other wrestlers and to uphold the traditions of sumo. They are also expected to be available for promotional events and to give back to the community.

Yokozuna today

There are currently two yokozuna: Hakuho Sho and Kakuryu Rikisaburo. Both wrestlers are from Mongolia.

Yokozuna are some of the most famous and respected athletes in Japan. They are symbols of strength, courage, and tradition.
