Helmut Berger (born 29 May 1944) is an Austrian actor. He is best known for his work with Italian director Luchino Visconti, and for his roles in films such as The Damned (1969), Ludwig (1972), The Night Porter (1974), and Conversation Piece (1974).

Early life and career

Berger was born in Bad Ischl, Austria, the son of a hotelier. He began his acting career in the early 1960s, appearing in small roles in films and television shows. In 1966, he was cast in the lead role in Visconti's The Damned, a film about a group of wealthy German industrialists who are corrupted by power. The film was a critical and commercial success, and it launched Berger's career as a leading man.
