Catherine Deneuve was born Catherine Fabienne Dorléac in Paris, France. She is the daughter of actors Maurice Dorléac and Renée Simonot. Deneuve began her acting career at the age of 14, appearing in small roles in films such as Les Collégiennes (1957) and Les Lavandières du Portugal (1957).

In 1960, Deneuve had her breakthrough role in the film Les Parapluies de Cherbourg (The Umbrellas of Cherbourg). The film was a critical and commercial success, and Deneuve received a nomination for an Academy Award for Best Actress.
