Early Life and Education

Ludwig van Beethoven was born on December 16, 1770, in Bonn, Germany. His father, Johann van Beethoven, was a musician in the court orchestra. Beethoven's mother, Maria Magdalena Keverich, was the daughter of a cook. Beethoven had two younger brothers, Kaspar Anton Karl and Nikolaus Johann.

Beethoven showed a talent for music at an early age. He began taking piano lessons from his father when he was five years old. In 1782, Beethoven moved to Vienna to study with Joseph Haydn. Haydn was one of the most famous composers of the time, and he was impressed by Beethoven's talent.

Career

Beethoven's career as a composer began in the early 1790s. He wrote a number of piano sonatas, string quartets, and symphonies. In 1799, Beethoven wrote his first opera, Fidelio. Fidelio is a story about a woman who disguises herself as a man to rescue her husband from prison.

In 1802, Beethoven began to lose his hearing. By 1818, he was completely deaf. Despite his deafness, Beethoven continued to compose. He wrote some of his greatest works during this time, including the Ninth Symphony and the Hammerklavier Sonata.

Beethoven died on March 26, 1827, in Vienna. He was 56 years old.
