Michael Haneke is an Austrian film director, screenwriter, and producer. He is best known for his films The White Ribbon (2009), Amour (2012), and Happy End (2017), all of which won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival.

Haneke was born in Munich, Germany, to Austrian parents. He studied philosophy and theater at the University of Vienna before beginning his career as a film critic. In 1967, he directed his first short film, The Seventh Continent. He continued to make short films and documentaries throughout the 1970s and 1980s, before making his feature film debut with The Benny's Video in 1992.

Haneke's films are often characterized by their bleakness, violence, and social commentary. He has been praised for his ability to provoke and disturb audiences, as well as his mastery of cinematic technique.
