Gordon Matthew Thomas Sumner (born 2 October 1951), known by his stage name Sting, is an English singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, actor, and philanthropist. He is best known as the lead singer and principal songwriter of the new wave rock band The Police, founded in 1977. After The Police disbanded in 1984, Sting embarked on a successful solo career.

Sting was born in Wallsend, Northumberland, England. He began playing music at a young age and formed his first band, Phoenix Jazzmen, in 1970. He later joined the progressive rock band Last Exit, which disbanded in 1975.

In 1977, Sting co-founded The Police with Stewart Copeland and Andy Summers. The band released five studio albums and became one of the most successful new wave rock bands of all time. The Police disbanded in 1984, but they have reunited for several tours and one-off concerts since then.

Sting began his solo career in 1985 with the release of his debut album, The Dream of the Blue Turtles. The album was a commercial success and spawned several hit singles, including "If You Love Somebody Set Them Free" and "Russians".
