Biography

Matthias Schoenaerts is a Belgian actor. He is best known for his roles in the films Bullhead (2011), Rust and Bone (2012), The Drop (2014), and Far from the Madding Crowd (2015).

Schoenaerts was born in Antwerp, Belgium, to Julien Schoenaerts, a Flemish actor, and Dominique Wiche, a French-Flemish costume designer. He has two sisters, Lynn and Johanna. Schoenaerts grew up in Antwerp and Brussels, and he attended the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp.

Schoenaerts began his acting career in 1992, when he appeared in a small role in the film Daens. He went on to appear in a number of other Flemish films, including Any Way the Wind Blows (2003) and The Memory of a Killer (2003). In 2011, Schoenaerts starred in the film Bullhead, for which he won the Best Actor Award at the Cannes Film Festival.

Schoenaerts's performance in Bullhead brought him international attention, and he soon began to appear in English-language films. In 2012, he starred in the film Rust and Bone, opposite Marion Cotillard. In 2014, he appeared in the film The Drop, opposite Tom Hardy and Noomi Rapace. In 2015, he starred in the film Far from the Madding Crowd, opposite Carey Mulligan.

Schoenaerts has also appeared in a number of television shows, including The Borgias (2011–2013) and Black Spot (2017–present).
