Steve Harris (born 12 March 1956) is an English musician, songwriter, and record producer. He is best known as the founder, bassist, primary songwriter, and leader of the heavy metal band Iron Maiden. Harris has written or co-written the majority of Iron Maiden's songs, including some of their biggest hits such as "Run to the Hills", "The Number of the Beast", "Aces High", and "Fear of the Dark". He is also known for his distinctive bass playing style, which is characterized by his use of galloping bass runs and melodic fills.
Harris was born in Leytonstone, London, England. He began playing guitar at the age of 14, but he soon switched to bass guitar. He formed his first band, Gypsy's Kiss, in 1975. After Gypsy's Kiss disbanded, Harris formed Iron Maiden in 1975. The band released their debut album, Iron Maiden, in 1980. The album was a commercial success, and it helped to establish Iron Maiden as one of the leading bands of the new wave of British heavy metal movement.
Iron Maiden went on to release a series of successful albums throughout the 1980s and 1990s, including Killers (1981), The Number of the Beast (1982), Piece of Mind (1983), Powerslave (1984), Somewhere in Time (1986), Seventh Son of a Seventh Son (1988), No Prayer for the Dying (1990), Fear of the Dark (1992), and The X Factor (1995). The band continued to release albums and tour throughout the 2000s and 2010s, including Brave New World (2000), Dance of Death (2003), A Matter of Life and Death (2006), The Final Frontier (2010), and The Book of Souls (2015).
Iron Maiden is one of the most successful heavy metal bands of all time. They have sold over 100 million albums worldwide, and they have been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Harris is considered to be one of the greatest bass players of all time. He has been praised for his innovative playing style and his ability to write catchy and memorable songs.
In addition to his work with Iron Maiden, Harris has also released two solo albums, British Steel (1990) and Somewhere Back in Time (1992). He has also produced albums for a number of other artists, including British Lion, Wolfsbane, and Thunder.
