Courtney Bass Cox (born June 15, 1964) is an American actress, producer, and director. She is best known for her roles as Monica Geller on the NBC sitcom Friends (1994-2004) and as Gale Weathers in the Scream film series (1996-present). Cox has also starred in the television series Dirt (2007-2008), Cougar Town (2009-2015), and Shining Vale (2022-present).

Cox was born in Birmingham, Alabama, to Courteney Bass, a homemaker, and Richard Lewis Cox, a businessman. She has two older sisters, Virginia and Dottie. Cox attended Mountain Brook High School in Birmingham and graduated in 1982. She then attended Mount Vernon College for Women in Washington, D.C., for one year before dropping out to pursue a career in acting.

Cox began her acting career in the early 1980s, appearing in a number of commercials and television shows. She made her film debut in the 1984 slasher film Night of the Comet.
