Joel Edgerton (born 23 June 1974) is an Australian actor, director, and screenwriter. He is best known for his roles in the films Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones (2002), Ned Kelly (2003), Animal Kingdom (2010), Zero Dark Thirty (2012), The Great Gatsby (2013), Exodus: Gods and Kings (2014), Black Mass (2015), Loving (2016), Bright (2017), Red Sparrow (2018), Boy Erased (2018), The King (2019), and The Green Knight (2021)

Edgerton has also directed two feature films: The Gift (2015) and Boy Erased (2018). He has received numerous awards and nominations for his work, including an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in Loving.

Career

Acting

Edgerton began his career in the mid-1990s, appearing in various Australian television shows and films. His first major role was in the 2002 film Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones, in which he played Owen Lars, the uncle of Luke Skywalker. He went on to appear in a number of other high-profile films, including Ned Kelly (2003), Animal Kingdom (2010), Zero Dark Thirty (2012), The Great Gatsby (2013), Exodus: Gods and Kings (2014), Black Mass (2015), Loving (2016), Bright (2017), Red Sparrow (2018), Boy Erased (2018), The King (2019), and The Green Knight (2021).

Edgerton has also appeared in a number of television shows, including The Secret Life of Us (2001–2005), The Tudors (2007), and Warrior (2019).

Directing

Edgerton made his directorial debut with the 2015 film The Gift, which he also wrote and starred in. The film was a critical and commercial success, and it received a number of awards and nominations, including a nomination for Best Director at the Independent Spirit Awards.

Edgerton's second directorial feature was Boy Erased (2018), which he also wrote and produced. The film is based on the memoir of Garrard Conley, who was sent to a gay conversion therapy program by his parents. Boy Erased received critical acclaim, and it was nominated for a number of awards, including an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay.

Personal life

Edgerton is married to Christine Centenera, a fashion designer. They have two children together.
