Early Life & Education
Hugo Weaving was born on April 4, 1960, in Ibadan, Nigeria, to British parents Anne (née Lennard) and Wallace Weaving. His father was an accountant and his mother was a teacher. Weaving has two younger brothers, Simon and Stephen.
Weaving's family moved to Australia when he was six years old. He attended Pymble Public School and Knox Grammar School in Sydney. After graduating from high school, Weaving studied drama at the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) in Sydney.
Acting Career
Weaving began his acting career in the early 1980s, appearing in small roles in Australian television shows and films. In 1984, he played the role of Ross in the acclaimed miniseries "Bodyline."
Weaving's breakthrough role came in 1999, when he played the character of Agent Smith in the science fiction film "The Matrix." The film was a critical and commercial success, and Weaving's performance was praised by critics. He reprised the role of Agent Smith in the sequels "The Matrix Reloaded" (2003) and "The Matrix Revolutions" (2003).
Weaving has since appeared in a number of other successful films, including "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy (2001-2003), "V for Vendetta" (2005), "Captain America: The First Avenger" (2011), and "Hacksaw Ridge" (2016).
In addition to his work in film, Weaving has also had a successful career in theater. He has appeared in productions of "Hamlet," "Macbeth," and "King Lear."
