Gianfranco Fini
Gianfranco Fini (born 3 January 1952) is an Italian politician who served as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs from 2008 to 2011. He is a former leader of the National Alliance and the Future and Freedom People parties.
Fini was born in Bologna, but moved to Rome as a child. He joined the neo-fascist Italian Social Movement (MSI) when he was 15 years old. In 1983, he was elected to the Chamber of Deputies, and in 1987 he became the MSI's secretary-general.
In 1994, the MSI merged with other right-wing parties to form the National Alliance. Fini became the party's leader, and in the 1996 general election, the National Alliance became the largest party in the right-wing coalition that won the election.
Fini served as Deputy Prime Minister in the government of Silvio Berlusconi from 2001 to 2006. In 2008, he became Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs in Berlusconi's fourth government.
In 2010, Fini founded the Future and Freedom People party. The party won 8.3% of the vote in the 2013 general election, but it failed to reach the threshold required to enter Parliament.
Fini has been accused of being a fascist and an anti-Semite. He has also been criticized for his close relationship with Berlusconi.
In 2014, Fini announced that he was retiring from politics. He said that he wanted to devote more time to his family and to writing.
Fini is married to Elisabetta Tulliani. They have two children.
