Katie Holmes (born December 18, 1978) is an American actress. She first achieved fame for playing Joey Potter on The WB teen drama television series Dawson's Creek (1998–2003). She went on to star in a number of films, including Batman Begins (2005), Thank You for Smoking (2005), and Mad Money (2008). In 2011, she made her Broadway debut in the play Dead Accounts.
Holmes was born in Toledo, Ohio, the daughter of Kathleen (née Stothers) and Martin Joseph Holmes Sr., a lawyer. She has three siblings: Martin Joseph Holmes Jr., Nathan Holmes, and Holly Holmes. Holmes attended St. John's Jesuit High School and Academy in Toledo, where she was a member of the drama club and the cheerleading squad. After graduating from high school in 1997, Holmes moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in acting.
Holmes' first significant acting role was as Joey Potter on Dawson's Creek. The series premiered on The WB in January 1998 and quickly became a hit. Holmes' portrayal of Joey, a shy and introverted teenager, earned her critical acclaim and a large fan base. Dawson's Creek ran for six seasons, ending in May 2003.
After Dawson's Creek ended, Holmes began her film career. She starred in the 2003 film The Singing Detective opposite Robert Downey Jr. and Adrien Brody. She also had roles in the 2004 films Pieces of April and First Daughter. In 2005, Holmes starred in Batman Begins, the first installment in Christopher Nolan's Batman film series. She played Rachel Dawes, a childhood friend of Bruce Wayne/Batman (Christian Bale). Holmes reprised her role as Dawes in the 2008 sequel, The Dark Knight.
In addition to her film and television work, Holmes has also appeared on Broadway. In 2011, she made her Broadway debut in the play Dead Accounts. The play received mixed reviews, but Holmes' performance was praised by critics.
Holmes has been married twice. She was married to actor Tom Cruise from 2006 to 2012. They have one child together, a daughter named Suri. Holmes was also in a relationship with actor Jamie Foxx from 2013 to 2019.
Holmes is a philanthropist and has been involved with a number of charitable organizations. She is a supporter of the charity Feed the Children and has also worked with the United Nations Development Programme.
