Hillary Diane Rodham Clinton (born October 26, 1947) is an American politician, diplomat, lawyer, and writer. She served as the 67th United States Secretary of State from 2009 to 2013, under President Barack Obama. She was the Democratic nominee for President of the United States in the 2016 election, losing to Republican nominee Donald Trump.
Clinton was born in Chicago, Illinois, and grew up in Park Ridge, Illinois. She graduated from Wellesley College in 1969 and Yale Law School in 1973. After graduating from law school, she moved to Arkansas, where she met and married Bill Clinton. She served as First Lady of Arkansas from 1979 to 1981 and again from 1983 to 1992.
In 1992, Bill Clinton was elected President of the United States. Hillary Clinton served as First Lady of the United States from 1993 to 2001. During her time as First Lady, she was an advocate for healthcare reform, early childhood education, and women's rights. She also played a role in the development of the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP).
In 2000, Hillary Clinton was elected to the United States Senate from New York. She served in the Senate from 2001 to 2009. During her time in the Senate, she was a vocal critic of the Iraq War and an advocate for healthcare reform. She also played a role in the passage of the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, which prohibits wage discrimination based on gender.
In 2008, Hillary Clinton ran for President of the United States. She won the Democratic nomination but lost the general election to Republican nominee Barack Obama.
In 2009, President Obama appointed Hillary Clinton as Secretary of State. She served in this role from 2009 to 2013. During her time as Secretary of State, she traveled to over 100 countries and met with leaders from around the world. She also played a key role in the negotiations that led to the Iran nuclear deal.
