Liv Ullmann
Liv Ullmann (born December 16, 1938) is a Norwegian actress, director, and screenwriter. In a career spanning six decades, she has appeared in over 100 films and television shows, and has directed eight feature films. She is best known for her collaborations with Swedish director Ingmar Bergman, with whom she made 10 films between 1966 and 2003. She is also known for her performances in films such as "The Emigrants" (1971), "Cries and Whispers" (1972), "Face to Face" (1976), and "Autumn Sonata" (1978).
Ullmann was born in Tokyo, Japan, to Norwegian parents. Her father, Johan Christian Ullmann, was an engineer, and her mother, Janna Lund, was a nurse. She was raised in Trondheim, Norway, and attended the Norwegian National Academy of Theatre. She made her stage debut in 1957, and her film debut in 1959.
Ullmann's breakthrough role came in Bergman's 1966 film "Persona", in which she played a nurse who exchanges identities with a famous actress. She went on to star in Bergman's films "Hour of the Wolf" (1968), "Shame" (1968), "The Passion of Anna" (1969), "Cries and Whispers" (1972), "Scenes from a Marriage" (1973), "Face to Face" (1976), "Autumn Sonata" (1978), "Fanny and Alexander" (1982), and "Saraband" (2003).
Ullmann's performances in Bergman's films earned her critical acclaim and numerous awards, including two Academy Award nominations for Best Actress, for "Cries and Whispers" and "Face to Face". She also won the BAFTA Award for Best Actress for "Face to Face", and the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama for "Autumn Sonata".
In addition to her work with Bergman, Ullmann has also appeared in films by other directors, such as Jan Troell, Andrej Wajda, and Richard Attenborough. She has also directed eight feature films, including "Sofie" (1992), "Kristin Lavransdatter" (1995), and "Miss Julie" (2014).
Ullmann is a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, and has been active in humanitarian work for many years. She is also a member of the Swedish Academy, which awards the Nobel Prize in Literature.
Ullmann is considered one of the greatest actresses of all time. She is known for her powerful and emotional performances, and her ability to convey the inner lives of her characters. She is also a respected director, and her films have been praised for their sensitivity and insight.
