Sali Berisha (born October 15, 1944) is an Albanian politician who served as the second President of Albania from 1992 to 1997 and the 31st Prime Minister of Albania from 2005 to 2013. He served as the leader of the Democratic Party of Albania from 1991 to 2013.
Early life and career
Berisha was born in Tropojë, Albania, on October 15, 1944. He studied medicine at the University of Tirana and worked as a cardiologist before entering politics.
Political career
Berisha was a founding member of the Democratic Party of Albania in 1990. He was elected to the Albanian Parliament in 1991 and became the party's leader the following year.
In 1992, Berisha was elected President of Albania. He served one term, during which time he oversaw the country's transition to a market economy and its integration into the international community.
In 1997, Berisha was overthrown in a popular uprising. He went into exile in Greece and Italy, but returned to Albania in 2001.
In 2005, Berisha was elected Prime Minister of Albania. He served two terms, during which time he oversaw the country's continued economic growth and its accession to NATO.
In 2013, Berisha was defeated in the parliamentary elections by Edi Rama. He stepped down as Prime Minister and leader of the Democratic Party.
Controversies
Berisha has been accused of corruption and authoritarianism. In 2015, he was indicted by the Albanian прокуратура on charges of abuse of power and embezzlement. He was acquitted of all charges in 2017.

Berisha is married to Liri Berisha and has two children. He is a fluent speaker of Albanian, English, Italian, and French.
