Manuel Belgrano
Manuel Belgrano (June 3, 1770 – June 20, 1820) was an Argentine lawyer, economist, politician, and military leader. He is regarded as one of the most important figures in Argentine history, and is best known for creating the Argentine flag.
Early life and education
Belgrano was born in Buenos Aires, the son of Domingo Belgrano Pérez, a merchant from Italy, and María Josefa González Casero. He studied law at the University of Salamanca in Spain, and also studied economics and politics. In 1794, he returned to Buenos Aires and began practicing law.
Political career
In 1806, Belgrano was elected to the Buenos Aires Cabildo, the city's governing body. He served as a member of the Cabildo until 1810, when he was appointed to the Primera Junta, the first independent government of Argentina. Belgrano was a strong advocate for independence from Spain, and he played a leading role in the Argentine War of Independence.
Military career
In 1811, Belgrano was appointed commander of the Army of the North. He led the army to several victories over the Spanish, but he was eventually defeated at the Battle of Vilcapugio in 1813. Belgrano was captured by the Spanish and held prisoner for two years. He was released in 1816, and he returned to Argentina to continue fighting for independence.
Creation of the Argentine flag
In 1812, while Belgrano was serving as commander of the Army of the North, he created the Argentine flag. The flag is composed of three horizontal stripes, light blue, white, and light blue. The light blue stripes represent the sky, and the white stripe represents peace and unity.
Death
Belgrano died in Buenos Aires on June 20, 1820, at the age of 50. He is buried in the Metropolitan Cathedral of Buenos Aires.
