Vanessa Lynn Williams (born March 18, 1963) is an American singer, actress, and fashion designer. She was the first African American woman to be crowned Miss America, in 1983.
Early life and education
Williams was born in Tarrytown, New York, the daughter of Milton Augustine Williams Jr., a music teacher and composer, and Helen Tinch Williams, a music teacher and special education teacher. She has two sisters, Sheree and Chris. Williams attended Syracuse University, where she majored in musical theatre.
Miss America
In 1983, Williams became the first African American woman to be crowned Miss America. Her victory was a major milestone in the history of the pageant, and she was widely praised for her beauty, intelligence, and talent. However, Williams's reign was short-lived. In July 1984, Penthouse magazine published nude photographs of her that had been taken without her consent. Williams was forced to resign from her title, and she was stripped of her crown.
Career
After her Miss America scandal, Williams embarked on a successful career in entertainment. She released her debut album, "The Right Stuff," in 1988, which went platinum. She has since released eight more studio albums, all of which have been certified gold or platinum.
