Uhuru Kenyatta (born October 26, 1961) is a Kenyan politician who has served as the fourth and current President of Kenya since 2013. Kenyatta is the son of Jomo Kenyatta, the first President of Kenya. He previously served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Gatundu South from 2002 to 2013.
Early life and education
Uhuru Kenyatta was born on October 26, 1961, at the Kenyatta National Hospital in Nairobi, Kenya. He is the son of Jomo Kenyatta, the first President of Kenya, and his fourth wife, Mama Ngina Kenyatta. Kenyatta has two brothers, Muhoho Kenyatta and Peter Kenyatta, and three sisters, Margaret Kenyatta, Ann Njeri Gakuo, and Christine Wambui Pratt.
Kenyatta attended St. Mary's School in Nairobi, where he was a classmate of Raila Odinga, the current Leader of the Opposition. He then went on to attend Amherst College in Massachusetts, United States, where he graduated with a degree in political science in 1985.
Political career
Kenyatta began his political career in 1997, when he was elected as the MP for Gatundu South. He was re-elected in 2002 and 2007. In 2008, Kenyatta was appointed Minister of Finance by President Mwai Kibaki. He served in this position until 2013, when he was elected President of Kenya.
Presidency
Kenyatta was elected President of Kenya in 2013, defeating Raila Odinga in the first round of voting. He was sworn into office on April 9, 2013.
