Penélope Cruz Sánchez (born April 28, 1974) is a Spanish actress. She is one of the most successful Spanish actresses in Hollywood, and she has won numerous awards, including an Academy Award, a British Academy Film Award, and a Golden Globe Award.

Cruz was born in Alcobendas, Madrid, Spain. She began her acting career in Spanish television and film in the early 1990s. Her breakthrough role came in the 1997 film Live Flesh, for which she won the Goya Award for Best Actress.

Cruz made her Hollywood debut in the 1998 film The Hi-Lo Country. She went on to star in a number of successful films, including Vanilla Sky (2001), Blow (2001), Vicky Cristina Barcelona (2008), Nine (2009), and Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (2011).

In 2009, Cruz won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in Vicky Cristina Barcelona. She was the first Spanish actress to win an Academy Award.

Cruz is also a successful fashion model. She has appeared on the covers of numerous magazines, including Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, and Elle. She has also been the face of several advertising campaigns, including for L'Oréal, Ralph Lauren, and Mango.

Cruz is married to Spanish actor Javier Bardem. They have two children together.

Personal life

Penélope Cruz was born in Alcobendas, Madrid, Spain, to Eduardo Cruz, a retailer, and Encarna Sánchez, a hairdresser. She has two younger siblings, Mónica and Eduardo. Cruz began dating Spanish actor Javier Bardem in 2007. They married in 2010 and have two children together, a son named Leo and a daughter named Luna.

Cruz is a vocal supporter of the rights of women and children. She is a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). She has also spoken out against domestic violence and human trafficking.
