Early life and education
Oprah Winfrey was born on January 29, 1954, in Kosciusko, Mississippi, to a teenage single mother, Vernita Lee. Winfrey's father, Vernon Winfrey, was a barber and businessman. Winfrey's early childhood was spent in poverty, and she faced many challenges, including abuse and neglect. At the age of six, she was sent to live with her father in Nashville, Tennessee.
