Mia Mottley
Mia Amor Mottley (born October 1, 1965) is a Barbadian politician and attorney who is the eighth and current Prime Minister of Barbados. She is the first woman to hold this office, and her Barbados Labour Party (BLP) won all 30 seats in the 2018 general election. Mottley previously served as Leader of the Opposition from 2010 to 2018 and as Attorney General and Minister of Home Affairs from 2001 to 2008.
Mottley was born in Saint Michael, Barbados. She attended St. Michael's Girls' School and Harrison College, before going on to study law at the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill. She then worked as a lawyer in Barbados and the United States, before entering politics in 1994.
Mottley was elected to the House of Assembly of Barbados in 1994, representing the constituency of Saint Michael South East. She served as Minister of Education, Youth Affairs and Culture from 1994 to 1996, and as Minister of Health from 1996 to 2001. In 2001, she was appointed Attorney General and Minister of Home Affairs, a position she held until 2008.
In 2010, Mottley became Leader of the Opposition, after the BLP lost the general election to the Democratic Labour Party (DLP). She led the BLP to victory in the 2018 general election, winning all 30 seats in the House of Assembly. Mottley was sworn in as Prime Minister on May 25, 2018.
Mottley has been praised for her leadership during challenging times. She has been credited with helping to stabilize the Barbadian economy and for her efforts to address climate change. She has also been a vocal advocate for gender equality and social justice.
Mottley is a member of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and the Commonwealth of Nations. She is also a member of the Council of Women World Leaders.
Mottley is married to Joseph Atherley, a Barbadian politician. They have two children.
