Marcelo Díaz is a Chilean professional footballer who plays as a defensive midfielder for Paraguayan club Libertad. He is a member of the Chile national team.
Díaz began his career with Universidad de Chile, where he won four Primera División titles and the Copa Sudamericana in 2011. In 2012, he moved to Swiss club Basel, where he won the Swiss Super League and the Swiss Cup in his first season. He then spent two seasons with German club Hamburger SV before joining Celta Vigo in Spain in 2015.
In 2017, Díaz returned to South America to play for Racing Club in Argentina. He won the Argentine Primera División in his first season with the club. In 2019, he moved to Mexican club Pumas UNAM.
Díaz has been a member of the Chile national team since 2009. He has represented his country at two FIFA World Cups (2010 and 2014) and four Copa América tournaments (2011, 2015, 2016, and 2019). He was a member of the team that won the Copa América in 2015 and 2016.
Díaz is known for his passing ability, tackling, and ability to read the game. He is considered one of the best defensive midfielders in South America.
