Juan Carlos Oblitas

Juan Carlos Oblitas Saba (born February 16, 1951) is a Peruvian former football player and manager. As a player, he was a member of the Peru national team at the 1978 FIFA World Cup. He is currently the sporting director of Club Universitario de Deportes.

Playing career

Oblitas was born in Lima, Peru. He began his career with local club Universitario de Deportes, where he won the Peruvian Primera División in 1969, 1971, and 1974. He also had spells with Spanish clubs Sevilla and Elche, and Mexican club UNAM.

International career

Oblitas made his debut for the Peru national team in 1973. He was a member of the team that qualified for the 1978 FIFA World Cup in Argentina. He played in all three of Peru's matches at the tournament, and scored a goal in the 4-1 defeat to Poland.

Managerial career

After retiring as a player, Oblitas began his managerial career with Universitario de Deportes. He won the Peruvian Primera División in 1982 and 1985. He also had spells with Sporting Cristal, Alianza Lima, and Cienciano del Cusco.

In 1996, Oblitas was appointed manager of the Peru national team. He led the team to the Copa América in 1997 and 1999, and to the 2002 FIFA World Cup in South Korea and Japan. He resigned from his position after Peru's elimination from the World Cup.

Oblitas has also worked as a pundit for ESPN and Fox Sports.
