Background and Early Life
Mario Abdo Benítez was born on November 10, 1971, in Asunción, Paraguay. He is the son of Mario Abdo Benítez Sr., a former private secretary to President Alfredo Stroessner, and Ruth Benítez Perrier. Abdo Benítez studied business administration at the Universidad Católica de Asunción and later earned a master's degree in political science from the University of Miami.
Political Career
Abdo Benítez began his political career in 2003 when he was elected to the Chamber of Deputies of Paraguay. He served in the Chamber of Deputies for five years, from July 1, 2003, to June 30, 2008. In 2008, he was elected to the Senate of Paraguay, where he served from July 1, 2008, to August 15, 2012.
In 2012, Abdo Benítez was elected Vice President of Paraguay, serving from August 15, 2012, to August 15, 2013. In 2018, he was elected President of Paraguay, taking office on August 15, 2018.
