Anderson was born in Dunfermline, Fife, Scotland, on August 10, 1947. He began playing the flute at the age of 11 and quickly developed a passion for music. After leaving school, Anderson worked as a journalist and a teacher before joining Jethro Tull in 1967.

Jethro Tull quickly became one of the most popular progressive rock bands of the 1970s.
