Emir Kusturica was born on November 24, 1954, in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, which was then part of Yugoslavia. He is a Serbian film director, screenwriter, actor, and musician. He rose to prominence in the 1980s with his films "When Father Was Away on Business" (1985) and "Time of the Gypsies" (1988), which won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival.
