Manuel Obafemi Akanji (born 19 July 1995) is a Swiss professional footballer who plays as a defender for Premier League club Manchester City and the Switzerland national team.
Club career Early career Akanji began his career at Wiesendangen, before joining Winterthur in 2009. In 2011, he moved to Basel, where he made his professional debut on 2 May 2015, in a 2–2 draw against Luzern. He scored his first goal for Basel on 13 March 2016, in a 3–0 win over Thun.
Borussia Dortmund Akanji joined Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund on 15 January 2018. He made his debut for the club on 27 January 2018, in a 1–0 defeat to Hannover 96. He scored his first goal for Dortmund on 6 April 2019, in a 2–0 win over VfB Stuttgart.
Manchester City Akanji joined Premier League club Manchester City on 1 September 2022. He made his debut for the club on 6 September 2022, in a 1–0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur.
International career Akanji represented Switzerland at the under-19, under-20, and under-21 levels. He made his debut for the senior team on 9 June 2017, in a 2–1 win over Belarus. He scored his first goal for Switzerland on 8 September 2018, in a 2–0 win over Iceland.
Akanji was a member of the Switzerland squad for the 2018 FIFA World Cup and the 2022 FIFA World Cup. He also played at the 2020 UEFA European Championship.
