- Hassan Sheikh Mohamud was born in Jalalaqsi, Somalia, on November 11, 1955. He is a member of the Hawiye clan, the largest clan in Somalia.
- Mohamud received his bachelor's degree in education from the Somali National University in 1981. He then went on to study at the University of Sudan, where he earned a master's degree in education in 1985.
- After completing his education, Mohamud worked as a teacher and a university administrator. He also served as the chairman of the Peace and Reconciliation Committee, a group that was formed to help resolve the conflict in Somalia.
