Early life and career

Brigitte Nielsen was born in Rødovre, Denmark, to Hanne Nielsen, a librarian, and Svend Nielsen, an engineer. She has one brother, Jan. Nielsen began her modeling career at the age of 16, when she won a modeling competition in Denmark. She moved to Paris in 1980 and then to Milan in 1981. In 1982, she made her film debut in the Italian comedy "Parole di notte".

They were married from 1990 to 1992. Her fourth husband was Raoul Meyer, an American actor. They were married from 1993 to 2005 and had two sons, Douglas and Raoul Jr. Her fifth husband is Mattia Dessi, an Italian television producer. They were married in 2006 and have one daughter, Frida.

Nielsen has been open about her struggles with substance abuse and mental health. She has been in and out of rehab multiple times. In 2008, she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder.
