Elvis Presley
Elvis Aaron Presley (January 8, 1935 – August 16, 1977) was an American singer and actor. Regarded as one of the most significant cultural figures of the 20th century, he is often referred to as the "King of Rock and Roll" or simply "the King". Presley's energized interpretations of songs and provocative performance style, which included elaborate stage costumes and pelvic thrusts, made him immensely popular and controversial.
Presley was born in Tupelo, Mississippi, and relocated to Memphis, Tennessee, with his family when he was 13. His music career began there in 1954, when he recorded a song with producer Sam Phillips at Sun Records. Accompanied by guitarist Scotty Moore and bassist Bill Black, Presley was a pioneer of rockabilly, an uptempo, backbeat-driven fusion of country and rhythm and blues. Radio play of his records led to a recording contract with RCA Victor, with which he would record most of his material.
Presley's fame spread throughout the United States and then worldwide with a series of network television appearances and chart-topping records. He made his acting debut in Love Me Tender (1956) and starred in 31 more films, which often featured his music. Although most were critically panned, several were commercially successful. In 1958, he was conscripted into military service, where he served two years.
Upon his return to civilian life in 1960, Presley resumed his recording and acting career. He held a widely publicized comeback television special in 1968 and launched a series of highly successful concert tours. In 1969, he married Priscilla Beaulieu and they had one child, Lisa Marie Presley.
In the 1970s, Presley suffered from prescription drug abuse and deteriorating health. He died at his Graceland estate in Memphis at the age of 42. The cause of his death was officially ruled as a heart attack, although the circumstances remain controversial.
