Romero began his career at Racing Club in Argentina, where he made his senior debut at the age of 18. He moved to Europe in 2011, joining Sampdoria in Italy, and later had spells with AS Monaco in France and Manchester United in England.
Romero made his debut for Argentina in 2009 and was a member of the squad that won the 2021 Copa América. He was also part of the team that reached the final of the 2014 FIFA World Cup and won the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
