Ruth Jacott
Ruth Jacott (born July 2, 1960) is an American actress, singer, songwriter, and comedian. She is best known for her roles as Lizette in the television series Perfect Strangers (1986–1993) and Carla Purviance in the sitcom Spin City (1996–2002).
Jacott was born in Brooklyn, New York, to Jamaican parents. She graduated from the Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts in 1978. She began her career as a singer and songwriter, releasing her debut album, "Ruth Jacott," in 1983. She also appeared in several Broadway musicals, including "Dreamgirls" and "The Wiz."
In 1986, Jacott landed her breakthrough role as Lizette in the television sitcom Perfect Strangers. The show, which starred Bronson Pinchot and Mark Linn-Baker, was a hit with audiences and ran for seven seasons. Jacott's performance as the sassy and opinionated Lizette earned her a nomination for a Golden Globe Award in 1987.
After Perfect Strangers ended in 1993, Jacott continued to work in television and film. She appeared in the sitcoms "The Cosby Show," "Family Matters," and "Suddenly Susan," and she had roles in the films "The Nutty Professor" (1996) and "Good Burger" (1997).
In 1996, Jacott joined the cast of the political sitcom Spin City. She played the role of Carla Purviance, the mayor's chief of staff. Jacott remained on the show for six seasons, until it ended in 2002.
Since leaving Spin City, Jacott has continued to work in television and film. She has appeared in the sitcoms "Scrubs," "Everybody Hates Chris," and "The Big C," and she has had roles in the films "The Ladykillers" (2004) and "The Devil Wears Prada" (2006).
Jacott is also a successful voice actress. She has voiced characters in the animated films "The Prince of Egypt" (1998), "Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron" (2002), and "The Incredibles" (2004).
In addition to her acting career, Jacott is also a writer and producer. She has written and produced several television shows, including "In the House" and "The Parkers."
