Early Life and Career

Tenzing Norgay was born in 1914 in Thame, a small village in the Solukhumbu district of Nepal. He was the son of a Sherpa farmer and a Tibetan mother. Norgay began his career as a porter on expeditions to Mount Everest in the 1930s. He quickly became known for his strength, endurance, and skill as a mountaineer. In 1947, Norgay was part of the first successful expedition to reach the summit of Mount Everest, along with British climber Edmund Hillary.
