Elissa (born Elissa Khoury; October 27, 1972) is a Lebanese singer. She is one of the best-selling female artists in the Middle East and the Arab world. Elissa has released eight studio albums, all of which have been certified platinum or multi-platinum in the Middle East and North Africa. She has also won numerous awards, including the World Music Award for Best-Selling Middle Eastern Artist in 2005 and 2006.

Early life and career

Elissa was born in Deir el-Ahmar, Baalbek-Hermel Governorate, Lebanon, to a Lebanese father and a Syrian mother. She has two sisters and one brother. Elissa began singing at a young age and participated in several local singing competitions. In 1992, she was discovered by Lebanese music producer Salim Salameh, who helped her sign a contract with EMI.

Elissa released her debut album, Baddi Doub, in 1998. The album was a commercial success in the Middle East and North Africa, and it established Elissa as a major star in the region.
