Celso Borges

Celso Borges Mora (born May 27, 1988) is a Costa Rican professional footballer who plays as a midfielder for Costa Rican club Alajuelense and the Costa Rica national team.

Borges began his career in Costa Rica with Deportivo Saprissa, where he won four league titles and the CONCACAF Champions League in 2005. In 2009, he moved to Norway to join Fredrikstad FK, where he spent two seasons before moving to AIK in Sweden. With AIK, he won the Allsvenskan title in 2018.

In 2012, Borges moved to Spain to join Deportivo de La Coruña, where he spent two seasons before moving to Levante UD. In 2015, he moved to Turkey to join Göztepe SK, where he spent one season before moving to Deportivo Saprissa.

Borges has represented Costa Rica at the FIFA World Cup in 2014 and 2018, as well as at the CONCACAF Gold Cup in 2009, 2011, 2015, 2017, and 2019. He has also represented Costa Rica at the Copa América in 2011 and 2016.

Borges is the son of Alexandre Guimarães, who is a former Costa Rican international footballer and manager. His uncle, Alvaro Solano, is a former Costa Rican international footballer.

Club career

Borges began his career with Deportivo Saprissa in Costa Rica. He made his debut for the club in 2006 and quickly established himself as a regular in the first team. He helped Saprissa win four league titles and the CONCACAF Champions League in 2005.

In 2009, Borges moved to Norway to join Fredrikstad FK. He spent two seasons with Fredrikstad, making 53 appearances and scoring 10 goals. In 2011, he moved to AIK in Sweden. He spent five seasons with AIK, making 140 appearances and scoring 22 goals. He helped AIK win the Allsvenskan title in 2018.

In 2012, Borges moved to Spain to join Deportivo de La Coruña. He spent two seasons with Deportivo, making 69 appearances and scoring 4 goals. In 2014, he moved to Levante UD. He spent one season with Levante, making 32 appearances and scoring 2 goals.

In 2015, Borges moved to Turkey to join Göztepe SK. He spent one season with Göztepe, making 28 appearances and scoring 3 goals. In 2016, he returned to Deportivo Saprissa.

International career

Borges has represented Costa Rica at the FIFA World Cup in 2014 and 2018, as well as at the CONCACAF Gold Cup in 2009, 2011, 2015, 2017, and 2019. He has also represented Costa Rica at the Copa América in 2011 and 2016.

Borges made his debut for Costa Rica in 2008. He has since made over 100 appearances for the national team. He is a member of the Costa Rican squad that reached the quarter-finals of the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
