Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan was born on October 13, 1948, in Faisalabad, Pakistan. He was the sixth of 12 children. His father, Fateh Ali Khan, was a renowned qawwal, and his mother, Noor Jehan, was a housewife.

Khan began learning qawwali music from his father at a young age. He gave his first public performance at the age of 15.

Khan was married four times. He had four sons and four daughters.

Khan died of a heart attack on August 16, 1997, at the age of 48. He is buried in Faisalabad.
