McAdams was born in London, Ontario, Canada, to Sandra Kay, a nurse, and Lance McAdams, a truck driver. She has one younger brother, Daniel. McAdams began acting in school plays at a young age. She graduated from York University in Toronto with a degree in theater in 2001.
