Gonzalo Higuaín

Gonzalo Gerardo Higuaín (Spanish pronunciation: [ɡonˈsalo iɣwaˈin]; born 10 December 1987) is an Argentine professional footballer who plays as a striker for Major League Soccer club Inter Miami CF.

Higuaín began his career at River Plate in Argentina, where he was the top scorer in the 2006–07 Primera División season. He then moved to Real Madrid in Spain, where he won three La Liga titles and the Copa del Rey. In 2013, he joined Napoli in Italy, where he won the Coppa Italia and the Supercoppa Italiana. In 2016, he was transferred to Juventus for €90 million, a Serie A record transfer fee. With Juventus, he won three Serie A titles, two Coppa Italia titles, and the Supercoppa Italiana. In 2020, he joined Inter Miami CF in the United States.

Higuaín has represented Argentina at various youth levels. He made his senior debut in 2009 and has since earned over 70 caps, scoring 31 goals. He has represented Argentina at two FIFA World Cups and three Copa América tournaments.

Early life and career

Higuaín was born in Brest, France, to Argentine parents Jorge Higuaín, a professional footballer, and Nancy Zacarías. He has two older brothers, Federico and Nicolás, who are also footballers. Higuaín began playing football at the age of four and joined the youth academy of River Plate in Argentina at the age of 10.

Club career

River Plate

Higuaín made his professional debut for River Plate in May 2005, at the age of 17. He scored his first goal for the club in October 2005, in a Copa Sudamericana match against Cienciano. In the 2006–07 season, Higuaín was the top scorer in the Primera División with 15 goals.

Real Madrid

In January 2007, Higuaín joined Real Madrid for a transfer fee of €13 million. He made his debut for the club in February 2007, in a La Liga match against Real Betis. Higuaín scored his first goal for Real Madrid in April 2007, in a Copa del Rey match against Barcelona.

In the 2007–08 season, Higuaín scored 24 goals in all competitions, helping Real Madrid win the La Liga title. He also won the Copa del Rey with Real Madrid in 2011.

Napoli

In July 2013, Higuaín joined Napoli for a transfer fee of €37 million. He made his debut for the club in August 2013, in a Serie A match against Hellas Verona. Higuaín scored his first goal for Napoli in September 2013, in a Serie A match against Bologna.

In the 2015–16 season, Higuaín scored 36 goals in Serie A, breaking the record for the most goals scored in a single Serie A season. He also won the Coppa Italia and the Supercoppa Italiana with Napoli in 2014.

Juventus

In July 2016, Higuaín joined Juventus for a transfer fee of €90 million. He made his debut for the club in August 2016, in a Serie A match against Fiorentina. Higuaín scored his first goal for Juventus in September 2016, in a Serie A match against Sassuolo.

In the 2016–17 season, Higuaín scored 24 goals in Serie A, helping Juventus win the league title. He also won the Coppa Italia with Juventus in 2017 and 2018.

Chelsea

In January 2019, Higuaín joined Chelsea on a six-month loan deal. He made his debut for the club in February 2019, in a Premier League match against Huddersfield Town. Higuaín scored his first goal for Chelsea in March 2019, in a Premier League match against Fulham.

AC Milan

In September 2019, Higuaín joined AC Milan on loan for the 2019–20 season. He made his debut for the club in September 2019, in a Serie A match against Hellas Verona. Higuaín scored his first goal for AC Milan in October 2019, in a Serie A match against Fiorentina.

Inter Miami CF

In September 2020, Higuaín joined Inter Miami CF on a free transfer. He made his debut for the club in September 2020, in a Major League Soccer match against Philadelphia Union. Higuaín scored his first goal for Inter Miami CF in October 2020, in a Major League Soccer match against FC Cincinnati.

International career

Higuaín has represented Argentina at various youth levels. He made his senior debut in 2009 and has since earned over 70 caps, scoring 31 goals. He has represented Argentina at two FIFA World Cups and three Copa América tournaments.

Personal life

Higuaín is married to Lara Wechsler, a model. They have three children together. Higuaín is a devout Catholic and has a tattoo of the Virgin Mary on his right arm.
