Joel Matip (born 8 August 1991) is a Cameroonian professional footballer who plays as a centre-back for Premier League club Liverpool and the Cameroon national team.
Matip began his career at Schalke 04, where he made his professional debut in 2009. He spent seven seasons with the club, making over 200 appearances in all competitions. In 2016, he joined Liverpool on a free transfer.
Matip has been a regular starter for Liverpool since his arrival at the club. He has helped the team win the Premier League, the UEFA Champions League, the UEFA Super Cup, and the FIFA Club World Cup.
Matip has also represented Cameroon at international level. He has made over 30 appearances for the team and was part of the squad that won the Africa Cup of Nations in 2017.
Playing style
Matip is a strong and physical defender who is good in the air and comfortable with the ball at his feet. He is also a good passer and has been known to score goals from set pieces.
