Plot

The story begins with Taras and his two sons returning home from a campaign against the Tatars. At the Sich, Andriy and Ostap quickly prove themselves to be skilled warriors. They participate in several battles against the Poles and the Tatars, and they earn the respect of their fellow Cossacks.

However, Andriy's loyalty to the Cossacks is tested when he falls in love with a Polish noblewoman. He deserts the Cossacks and joins the Polish army. Taras is enraged by Andriy's betrayal, and he vows to kill him. He eventually tracks Andriy down and kills him in a duel.

Ostap remains loyal to the Cossacks, and he fights bravely against the Poles. He is eventually captured and executed by the Poles. Taras is devastated by Ostap's death, but he vows to continue fighting for the Cossack cause. He leads the Cossacks to several more victories against the Poles, but he is eventually killed in battle.
