Early Life and Career

Waris Dirie was born in Galkayo, Somalia, in 1965. She was the youngest of twelve children. At the age of five, she underwent FGM, a painful and dangerous procedure that is still practiced in many parts of Africa. Dirie later said that this experience inspired her to become an activist against FGM.

In 1990, Dirie was discovered by a fashion photographer while working as a maid in London. She quickly became a successful model, appearing in campaigns for major fashion houses such as Chanel, Versace, and L'Oréal.

Activism and Writing

In 1997, Dirie published her autobiography, Desert Flower, which became a bestseller and was translated into more than 40 languages. In the book, Dirie describes her experiences as a model and an FGM survivor. She also speaks out against the practice of FGM and calls for its eradication.
