Early life Keith Richards was born in Dartford, Kent, England, on December 18, 1943. His father, Bert Richards, was a factory worker, and his mother, Doris Richards, was a schoolteacher. He has one sister, Valerie. Richards' family moved to London when he was young, and he attended primary school in Dartford. He later attended Sidcup Art College, where he studied art and design.
Musical career Richards began playing guitar at the age of 15. He formed his first band, The Rolling Stones, in 1962 with Mick Jagger, Brian Jones, Ian Stewart, and Mick Avory.
