Boris Johnson is a British politician who has served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and Leader of the Conservative Party since 2019. He has been known for his controversial statements and actions, which have led to calls for his resignation.
Early Life and Career
Boris Johnson was born in New York City in 1964 to British parents. He was educated at Eton College and Oxford University, where he studied Classics. After graduating from Oxford, Johnson worked as a journalist for The Times and The Daily Telegraph. In 1997, he was elected to Parliament as the MP for Henley.
Mayor of London
In 2008, Johnson was elected Mayor of London. During his time as mayor, he oversaw the 2012 Summer Olympics and introduced a number of policies, including the "Boris Bike" cycle hire scheme. He was re-elected in 2012.
Foreign Secretary
In 2016, Johnson was appointed Foreign Secretary by Prime Minister Theresa May. He resigned from this position in 2018 in protest at May's Brexit deal.
Prime Minister
In July 2019, Johnson was elected Leader of the Conservative Party. He became Prime Minister on July 24, 2019. Johnson's premiership has been dominated by Brexit. He promised to "get Brexit done" and negotiated a new deal with the European Union. The deal was approved by Parliament in January 2020 and the UK left the EU on January 31, 2020.
Controversy
Johnson has been a controversial figure throughout his career. He has been accused of dishonesty, racism, and sexism. In 2021, he became the first British Prime Minister to be found to have broken the law while in office, after he was fined by the police for attending a party during the COVID-19 lockdown.
Personal Life
Johnson has been married twice. He has six children with his first wife, Allegra Mostyn-Owen, and one child with his second wife, Carrie Symonds.
