Biography
Idriss Déby was born on June 18, 1952, in Berdoba, Chad. He was a member of the Zaghawa ethnic group. Déby joined the Chadian National Armed Forces (FANT) in 1975. He fought in the Chadian Civil War (1965-1979) and rose through the ranks, becoming Commander-in-Chief of the FAN in 1982.
In 1989, Déby led a rebellion against President Hissène Habré. He was successful in overthrowing Habré and became President of Chad in 1990. Déby was re-elected in 1996, 2001, 2006, 2011, and 2016.
During his time as President, Déby faced a number of challenges, including the Chadian-Libyan conflict (1987-1990), the Darfur conflict (2003-2008), and the Boko Haram insurgency (2009-present). Déby also faced domestic opposition from rebel groups and political opponents.
Déby was known for his strongman rule and his close ties to France. He was also accused of human rights abuses and corruption.
In 2021, Déby was killed in battle while leading troops against rebels in the Kanem region of Chad. He was succeeded by his son, Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno.
Legacy
Idriss Déby was a controversial figure. He was praised by some for bringing stability to Chad and for fighting against terrorism. However, he was also criticized for his authoritarian rule and his human rights record.
Déby's death in 2021 left Chad in a state of uncertainty. It remains to be seen how his son, Mahamat, will rule the country and whether he will be able to maintain stability.
