Jimmy Cliff, OD (born James Chambers on 1 April 1948) is a Jamaican ska, rocksteady, reggae, and soul musician, singer, and actor. He is the only living reggae musician to hold the Order of Merit, the highest honour that can be granted by the Jamaican government for achievements in the arts and sciences.

Early life and career

Cliff was born in Somerton, Saint James, Jamaica. He began his music career in 1962, recording for the Beverley's label. His first hit single was "Hurricane Hattie" (1963). In 1964, he signed with Island Records and released his debut album, Hard Road to Travel. The album was a critical and commercial success, and it helped to popularize reggae music outside of Jamaica.

Cliff's subsequent albums, including The Harder They Come (1972), Unlimited (1973), and Give Thanx (1978), were also successful. He has won several awards, including a Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album in 1985.

Acting career

In addition to his music career, Cliff has also had a successful acting career. He made his film debut in The Harder They Come (1972), in which he played the lead role of Ivanhoe Martin. He has since appeared in several other films, including Club Paradise (1986), Cool Runnings (1993), and Marley & Me (2008).

Personal life

Cliff is a Rastafarian. He has been married three times and has eight children. He is a supporter of the People's National Party (PNP) and has been involved in Jamaican politics.

Legacy

Jimmy Cliff is one of the most successful and influential reggae musicians of all time. He has helped to popularize reggae music outside of Jamaica and has won several awards for his work. He is also a successful actor and has appeared in several films. Cliff is a Rastafarian and has been involved in Jamaican politics. He is a supporter of the People's National Party (PNP).
