Biography
James Cromwell is an American actor. He is known for his roles in Babe (1995), American Horror Story: Asylum (2012–2013), and The Green Mile (1999). He has been nominated for an Academy Award three times, for his performances in Babe, L.A. Confidential (1997), and The Green Mile.
Cromwell was born in Los Angeles, California. He is the son of John Cromwell, an actor and director, and Kay Johnson, an actress. Cromwell attended the University of Colorado at Boulder and the American Academy of Dramatic Arts.
Cromwell began his acting career in the early 1970s. He appeared in small roles in films such as The People vs. Jean Harris (1981) and The Verdict (1982). He also appeared in television series such as Magnum, P.I. (1980–1988) and Hill Street Blues (1981–1987).
Cromwell's breakthrough role came in the 1995 film Babe. He played Farmer Hoggett, a kind-hearted farmer who raises a pig named Babe. The film was a critical and commercial success, and it earned Cromwell a nomination for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.
